HARRISBURG – Rep. Matthew Dowling (R-Fayette/Somerset) announced three state grants totaling $350,000 to assist with affordable housing in Fayette and Somerset counties.

“This is an important investment in the health and safety of our residents and our communities,” Dowling said. “Affordable housing is a basic necessity and we have a responsibility to help ensure its availability.”

The grants are as follows:

$75,000 for Fayette Community Action Agency Inc. to increase use of its Financial Opportunity Center (FOC) by having a devoted full-time financial coach available to all families served at the agency in any financial capacity. The program aims to help disadvantaged families and individuals realize lasting economic stability.
$125,000 for Fayette County Redevelopment Authority Neighborhood Development Initiative program to provide assistance to low- and moderate-income families purchasing single-family homes throughout Fayette County. Assistance through the program may include homeownership counseling, down payment and closing cost assistance, and gap financing.
$150,000 for Tableland Services Inc. and its NextGEN STEPS, a youth-focused housing program in Somerset County to serve adults between ages 18-24. Ten households will be assisted with a scattered site model and an extensive system of mainstream resources and housing supports that work to achieve and maintain permanent housing.

The grants were approved by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency through the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement program. PHARE is funded by Marcellus Shale impact fees, realty transfer taxes, and the National Housing Trust Fund. PHARE projects fall into seven target categories including tax credits, homeless prevention, homeownership, housing counseling and financial education, innovative housing solutions, preservation/rehabilitation/renewal, and rental housing creation.
