Dowling Invites Residents to Annual Hunger Garden Planting on May 30
UNIONTOWN – Rep. Matthew Dowling (R-Fayette/Somerset) today invited residents to join him in a local effort to combat the issue of hunger by attending the ceremonial planting of a Hunger Garden on Thursday, May 30, from 4-7 p.m. at the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, located at 65 W. Main St., Uniontown.

This is a free, public event. Local vendors will be on-site providing refreshments.
“Although many of us may not realize it, the issue of hunger lives right in our own neighborhoods,” Dowling said. “In addition to helping to combat hunger through its harvest, the Hunger Garden serves as a visual reminder that there are many in our region who struggle to afford the basic necessities.”

The Fayette County Food Bank, operated by the Fayette Community Action Agency, is one of the community partners that will benefit from of the harvest.
A non-perishable food collection will also take place during the event.

In Pennsylvania, nearly 1.5 million people are struggling with hunger, and of them, 437,340 are children. That means one in every eight people struggle with hunger. Right here in Fayette County, 19,430 individuals qualified as food insecure. In 2017, that is 14.6 % of our population, according to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap 2017: Overall Food Insecurities in Pennsylvania by County.

Those interested in information regarding the Hunger Garden should contact Amanda Cuteri at Dowling’s office at 724-438-6100 or email at
