Dowling to Host Veterans Picnics, Ceremonies to Honor Area Heroes
UNIONTOWN – Rep. Matt Dowling (R-Fayette/Somerset) is inviting all area veterans, along with their families, to picnics and ceremonies honoring their service to the United States. Non-veterans who wish to pay tribute to the men and women who dedicate their lives to protect their country are also welcome to attend.

“Our veterans have and continue to devote their lives to not only protect their families and our Commonwealth, but our nation as a whole,” Dowling said. “The sacrifices they chose to make for us will never be forgotten, and these events are one small way we can show them that we not only remember, but are eternally grateful to them.”

This year, two picnics and ceremonies will be held in the area at no charge for attendees. These two events are open to veterans of all wars, conflicts and other military operations. The first picnic and ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 23, at the Hopwood AMVETS Post 103, located at 123 Buttermilk Lane, Hopwood. The second picnic and ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 24, at Meyersdale American Legion Post 112, located at 413 Grant St., Meyersdale.

Saturday’s picnic and ceremony will be catered by the Historic Stonehouse Inn and Albert Gallatin JROTC will be assisting in the ceremony. Sunday’s picnic and ceremony will be catered by Yoder’s Guest House and Meyersdale Legion Color Guard will be assisting in the ceremony. Local Marine Cpl. Brandon Rumbaugh will be the guest speaker at both ceremonies. Several booths offering information of interest to veterans will be on site at both events as well.

Saturday’s event will run from 12:30-3:30 p.m., with veteran registration beginning at noon, and Sunday’s event will run from 2-4:30 p.m., with veteran registration beginning at 1:30 p.m. Dowling encourages area veterans to register in advance by visiting or by contacting his offices at 724-438-6100 or 814-634-4390.
