– Rep. Matthew Dowling (R-Fayette/Somerset) announced East End United Community Center in Fayette County has been awarded a $15,000 grant through the state’s Farm to School Grant Program.
The grant program provides schools with funding to improve access to healthy, local foods and increase agriculture education opportunities for students.
“It’s important to help our children truly understand where their food comes from,” Dowling said. “We need to take them beyond the grocery store and teach them about the farmers growing food in their own communities.”
The grant funds will be used to provide students with weekly CSA boxes and support classroom curriculum and experiential learning at local farms.
The project was one of 39 to receive funding through the program, which was created as part of the Pennsylvania Farm Bill initiative.
