Fayette Co. Task Force On Homelessness

Our Fayette County region and the Commonwealth are suffering the plague of homelessness, and the problem could get worse now that state funding is being redirected away from emergency shelter services in favor of other programs.

That’s why area lawmakers and I have joined with local government officials, business leaders and shelter directors to create the Fayette County Task Force on Homelessness. The task force is meeting monthly with a goal of identifying alternative sources of funding to keep local shelters up and running.

Programs like City Mission-Living Stones Inc., Bridgehouse and other housing initiatives available through Fayette County Community Action provide emergency shelter assistance but also take a step further by working to address issues that may have caused a person or family to become homeless. The ultimate goal is to help people move from homelessness to self-sufficiency.

Considering that Fayette County is considered the second-poorest county in the Commonwealth, I joined with several colleagues in sending a letter to Gov. Tom Wolf in January, inquiring about the distribution of funds for homeless services. You can read the letter here. You can also read the governor’s response to our letter here.

If you have questions or suggestions for the task force, please contact my office in Uniontown at 724-438-6100 or click here to submit a comment or question through this website.
